What is the dance-database of the DBT?

(Deutscher Bundesverband Tanz means: German Dance Association)

  • It is a standalone PC-Programm, orderable at Deutschen Bundesverband Tanz (DBT). More info see: technique of the dance-database
  • It is a rich source of German and international (folk-)dances
  • A lot of search-functions are provided
  • Own archives-material can be added easily
  • It provides a lot of lists about the own archiv-material
  • It is able to contain and manage the material of multiple archives

What is in the dance-database? (March 2006)

  • 62.565 TOC-entries out of 3.235 books
  • more than 23.000 music-titles out of 2.360 albums
  • 2.879 remarks to books
  • 30.804 remarks to TOC-entries (dances)

Additional information about

  • 2.313 towns/regions, 1.260 authors, 978 publishers, 478 orchesters, 238 informants

Newest Data see: NeueDaten

What is not in it?

Due to copyright-reasons it is not allowed to insert wether the dance-descriptions nor the notes or the musik from the information-sources into the dance-database.

In spite of this in the most cases there is the name of the publisher and/or the ISBN- or ordering-number noted, so the user can order the books/records from a provider.

For whom is the dance-database useful?

  • For leaders or members of a dancegroup, archives, dance-collectors
  • for all who have gathered own books / records
  • for all who want to get an overview over the informations contained in their own archives
  • for all who want to search definitely for dances or music titles
  • for all who want to insert their own search criteria to order dances or music into categories to easily refind it

Number of members using the dance-database

  • 22 active archives/collectors out of Germany, Austria and Denmark
  • about 55 additional users up to now (October. 2006)

Functions of the dance-database [see Auswahlbildschirm (selection-screen)]

  • To show books, book-contents, albums and record-contents (music-titels)
  • Search for a lot of different criteria (with easy to use searchmasks)[see "Bücher suchen"-Bildschirm (search-for-books-screen)]
  • Insert own books and records together with their table of contents (TOC).
Because many books/records are already contained in the database (i.e. all Kögler-albums), it is often only necessary to insert the own archives-number of the book/album and the work for this book/album is finished. From now on all dances/articles of the book or music-titles of the album will be shown in the private archives-lists of this user..[see "Bucheingabe"-Bildschirm (book-input-screen)]
  • Insert additional information to dances or music-titles like: steps, handholdings, danceauthor, position in the room, number of repeats, key, measure, tempo, even music-author (componist), information-person and a lot of other things can be noted in the dance-database. Later on it is possible to search for this added information.[see "Inhalt ergänzen"-Bildschirm (add-to-contents-screen)]
  • Printing of the data
    • Books: all books out of the own archives sorted by titel, author, publisher or privat archives-number [see "Buch-Druck"-Bildschirm (print-book-screen)
    • Contents: dances/articles of each book sorted by alphabet, running-number or page-number in the book.
    • Contents: the dances/articles of all books out of the own archives sorted by alphabet
    • Albums: all albums out of the own archives sorted by name or privat archives-number
    • Music-title: contents of each album (disk, MC, CD) sorted by alphabet or running number on the record
    • Music-title: the music-titles of all albums out of the own archives sorted by alphabet or privat archives-number
    • Miscellenious: all authors, publishers or orchesters sorted by shortsign,
archives sorted by running number or shortsign
  • Data-exchange: each user will send in the data inserted by him/her to the central point. The new data will there be inserted into the central version of the database. Thereafter the user will get back a new version of the database with all updates done in the meantime (as well new data as also program corrections) a so called update. By this way the dance-database will become more and more complete and therefore more meaningful.

The technique of the dance-database

  • Prerequisites: Windows-PC and Windows 3.x or Windows 9.x, ME, 2000, or XP
  • Source: 3 diskettes databaseprogram, 3 diskettes dance-database,
about 50 MB free space on disk C: of the PC
  • Costs: Euro 24,50 (level May 2006)
  • Ordering: see DBt: http://www.dbt-remscheid.de/tanzdatenbank.html
  • History: 1992 til 2006 in nonprofessional, nonpayed work in the free time of the the members of the 'Arbeitskreis Tanzdatenbanken im DBT' (see Copyright)
  • Database-management-programm: Paradox for Windows 5.0 Runtimeversion (will be delivered with the dance-database without additional costs)
  • Database-size: beside of the four main tables: Buch (book) - Inhalt (contents) and Tontr (records) - Musik (music-titles) there are 62 other tables (for archives, remarks, aliasnames etc.) as well as 42 lookaside-tables, 88 screen-masks (for data input and searchfunctions) and 56 prepared reports for printing.

The history of the dance-database

Since 1989 the author is gathering folkdance data in a computer. In the first time it was only an 80 column textfile of books and records. But soon the bulk of information became too much and this list was muggled. What to do now? A database-managment-program had to be selected that would be able to search the archived dances and music-titles for different search-criteria. In 1991 Walter Kögler, Stuttgart, in the publication "Tanzen" asked for other dance-collectors, who could help him to put in all the new dances into the computer. A first contact was established and in the meantime there are more than a dozen members from Germany, Austria and Denmark in the 'Arbeitskreis Tanzdatenbanken' of 'Deutscher Bundesverband Tanz', which are working in this area and which place their collected data for the good matter of folkdance at disposel.

In 1992/93 the author developed a dance-database-program running under DOS that run successful at some dancefreaks. Since 1995 in the 'Arbeitskreis Tanzdatenbanken' he developed 1996 the Windows-version of this program.

In 1996/97 the 'LAG Tanz' (country association of dance) of Schleswig-Holstein put in in only a few sessions 362 books with this program. 157 Bücher, that are nearly 50 %, were already put in before by other dance-collectors. For this 157 books only the own archives-numbers had to be typed in and the job was done.

Also only 25 authors and 23 publishers had to be put in, all other were already in the dance-database. The 'LAG Tanz' of Schleswig-Holstein was now at last able to give definit response over the contents of their own archives containing 6.354 dances, if one of their 150 dancegroups had a special question where to find the description or the music of a dance.

Such a programm will never be finally finished. Together with the active users problems in the use or functions of the program are resolved. In the first releases of the program it was only possible to insert the contents of literatur and music sources. Now it is also possible to give in additional information for each dance or musik-title contained in the dance-database. More functions are planned and inserted into the program as time allowes.

So in the meantime the input of steps and handholdings is also possible (3/2000)

Short description of the advantages of the dance-database

  • When typing in data all information about the dances and musik-titles contained in the sources of the archives (books, records, maps with loose pages, music-books) as well as the private archives-numbers are save in the data-base.
  • Prepared reports allows it to list the books, dances, records and music-titles. So you are always able to get an overview about the contents of your own archives. Additional an alphabetical list of the contents (dances/articles) of all books as well as all music-titles of all records in the own archives is available.
  • Due to ease-of-use search-functions it is also possible for untrained database users to search for books, records, dances and music-titles. The search-results may also be printed.

Thanks to: many persons - even from Austria and Denmark - have driven and active supported the project "Tanzdatenbank" with great engagement. They brought in their special knowledge about different dance-types and regions, their experience as danceleader, the data of their private dance-collection as well as technical knowledge into the present work, to help other danceleaders and to make their job more easy.

Without this members, that honory submitted their freetime for the developement of the program and the buildup the of the database contents, this project would not be accomplished.
